DASHAIN and TIHAR

Dashain is the biggest and most widely celebrated Hindu festival in Nepal, also observed by Nepali communities around the world.

Tihar (तिहार) is the festival of lights in Nepal, also called Deepawali or Yamapanchak. It comes right after Dashain and lasts for five days

Dashsin celebrates the visctory of good over evil. It honors Goddess Durga's triumph over the demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the power of Righteousness. Whereas, Tihar is about light, prosperity, gratitude, and relationships.

DASHAIN and TIHAR requires tika ingredients (red vermilion, rice, yogurt, seeds), a Kalasha (holy pot), and jamara seeds (barley, maize) for the ritualistic sprouted grass. Essential items also include new clothes, food for feasts, gifts for elders, and items for activities.
